Jakarta’s best burgers at Goods Diner?

This weekend we caught up with our recently-returned friend, Andrew, who we were keen to impress with our growing knowledge of all things awesome in Jakarta. We had visited the Goods Diner for dinner a few weeks earlier, and were so impressed with their famous burgers that we came back for round two on this Saturday lunch.

The Goods Diner is part of the Fairgrounds complex, also home to the famous Potato Head Garage and upstairs, Lucy in the Sky. Fairly unassuming from the outside, the restaurant boasts a spacious and sunlit interior, with brown leather booths lining big, street-facing windows (although all the in smoking section, unfortunately). It’s reminiscent of Loewy, but nestled in an even fancier part of town, just 100m from Pacific Place.

On weekends, the Goods Diner plays host to a special brunch menu, from 8am til 4pm. Don’t worry – their famous burgers are still on the menu, but amongst some other delicious options including crab cake benedict (RP60,000), homemade scones with cream and jam (RP30,000) and chocolate peanut butter french toast (RP60,000). If you are feeling in the mood to try their speciality, the breakfast burger (sunny side up with bacon patty, RP80,000) and the coffee rubbed patty with home-made BBQ sauce (RP80,000) make for delicious all-rounder options.

The service is friendly and professional, although I do think the staff have been strictly instructed to speak English to Westerners, which I find slightly irksome. Our coffee (served with fresh chocolate chip cookies, win!) came quickly and in a generously-oversized mug, and food was on our table within 20 minutes of ordering. By the time we finished our meals at about 1:00pm, the restaurant had started to fill out, obviously a popular spot for Indonesians as well as Westerners.

Goods Diner has a great vibe, and the menu to match. For a safe bet, go for a burger with a side of parmesan fries, as well as your choice of jack, brie or blue cheese. It doesn’t get much better than that.
