If you’re sick of Ubud’s endless rice fields and looking for a change of scenery, the views don’t come much better than Kupu Kupu Barong Resort and Spa. Overlooking three hectares of lush tropical gardens and the spectacular Ayung river, the La View restaurant and bar is the perfect place to sink a cocktail or two as the sun goes down, but only if you’ve got a few hundred thousand rupiahs to spare.
Nestled among Kupu Kupu’s 38 luxury villages, La View is one of Ubud’s most upscale locations. It features a swanky cliff-set bar, a multi-levelled restaurant and if you’re feeling especially luxurious, two private dining areas for exclusive bookings. The best thing about it is the scenery; every aspect has been designed to take advantage of Ubud’s natural beauty.
We were lucky enough to be given a tour of the grounds and some of the Kupu Kupu Bungalows, most of which feature their own private pool and balcony. Starting at around US$265 per night, these accommodation options are some of the priciest you’ll find in Ubud, but they are admittedly gorgeous, and the hostess did mention they are open to bargaining.
The drinks list is short and to the point: classic cocktails, spirits and beers, all for some of the highest prices we’ve seen in Ubud so far, but it can be worth it to splash out from time to time. A small Bintang will set you back RP50,000, so you may as well upgrade to a cocktail; my lychee martini (RP9,000) was small but potent, served with some complimentary nuts and delicious deep fried peas.
Our budget definitely didn’t allow an overnight stop but we did enjoy soaking in the lavishness of it all for an hour, pretending we had much more money then we actually do and marvelling at the view. Maybe one to save for your last night in Ubud, when you may as well spend the rest of your loose change before heading sadly home.
