On Saturday night we met up with a couple of friends to check out the Beer Garden in Mentang. We’d been on the lookout for something a bit more low key than the cocktail bars we’d been frequently lately, and this bar was right on the money.
We rocked up at about 830pm which, without a reservation, is about the latest you’d want to arrive, as it filled up pretty quick. We were ushered to a table in the outdoor seating area, framed by high white walls and dimly lit by flickering candles.
Beer Garden has a fairly relaxed vibe, with the open seating plan giving every table plenty of space and a sense of intimacy despite being crowded. Live music kicked off at about 9pm, with an acoustic band crooning hits from Oasis to Pharrell.
The drinks menu has (not surprisingly) an extensive beer collection, with almost 30 different local and international brews. What’s more unexpected are the reasonable prices, with standard imports averaging around RP50,000.
The generosity also extends to the signature cocktails and spirits, which start at RP74,000 and RP55,000 respectively. Our favourites were the Birds of Hawaii cocktail, a delicious mix of honey, pineapple, passionfruit, triple sec and peach liqueur, the classic Gin and Tonic, and of course, the supersize beers.
The best thing about Beer Garden, however, was the cost of the bill. Wrapping up after two hours of some fairly solid drinking, we each chucked in RP250,000 to cover the cost and then some. Not bad for a thoroughly enjoyable evening and a hung-over Sunday to boot.
